hello, thank u for the follow back!! i stumbled on your cute site on nekoweb's explore page and ended up reading your very thoughtful blog post... thank you for the read! i share a lot of the same sentiments on being both a (critical) fan of idols, but also a fan of music first and foremost...
although this is jpop and not kpop, to tie into your blog post, SUPER DRAGON (a not very known japanese idol group with members who all write their own lyrics and produce their own beats!) very recently released a rap song "dissing" or commenting on the state of the idol music industry and idols who don't write their own lyrics/music called "Wild" (or in Japanese, "Yabbai"
.
you can listen to it here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKGbO9kFRu8
unfortunately, SUPER DRAGON isn't popular enough for anyone to have made an English translation for this song yet. google translate might get you somewhere, but these boys were rapping things like "can't you even write what you wanna say on your own?" and "you call yourself an artist, but your music studio is tiktok" which is indeed WILD skjfhsdjk. in subsequent livestreams/interviews the boys have reiterated that the reason they can get away with writing and saying this stuff is precisely because they are also idols themselves. they've also since clarified it's not really dissing (questionable lol) but more so something like tough love, because these boys really do respect idols and know the industry very intimately (they have been idols for over 10 years!). member Tsuyoshi, who was the main person who composed and conceptualized the song "Wild" is a big fan of hiphop. He stated in an interview about the song that he wanted to stress the importance of understanding/knowing and respecting the culture that you borrow from as an idol (in this case, hiphop), the very thesis of your blog post! he then went on to cite his inspirations and influences for the song by name, mentioning TERIYAKI BOYZ, Kanye, Pharell Williams, etc.
sorry if it seems like i'm just shilling my lesser known jpop group, it's kind of what my entire site is about HAHAH, but it is quite interesting, because SUPER DRAGON is the closest thing to authenticity i've found in an idol group, but it was at the cost of being basically neglected by their company (which in turn gave them creative freedom because lowk their company didnt gaf about them or what they did) and it actually hasn't really helped them in terms of popularity. but, as you've pointed out in your observations, we are living in a time where authenticity is more and more sought after, so that gives me hope for this group of mine...!
if you would like to check out an idol group that produces 90% of what they make, from the music to the outfit styling to their concepts, i recommend checking out SUPER DRAGON!! my current favorite song from them is "Concealer", which was composed/written/produced by the member Jean!
sorry for yapping so much! i look forward to seeing more of your site and your blog posts! ^^

oh my gosh hello! don't even worry, i've seen your site and i adore the passion you have for SUPER DRAGON, even if i'm not too knowledgeable on the j-pop side of things. i always find it super fascinating when idols talk about their own industry because it gives a lot of insight that someone outside of that space would never get otherwise. i'm sure there's a lot more idols who feel this way than anyone would realise.
next time i'm sitting down to listen to new music, i'll definitely give some of their stuff a try! thank u for visiting!
